MOROCCO, Rabat – Nigeria are the champions of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of nations (WAFCON) 2025.
The Nigerian side fought from two goals down to show the patience and zeal as they stopped Morocco 3-2 in an extraordinary comeback at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on July 26th.
Morocco scored through skipper Ghizlane Chebbak after 12 minutes, and Sanna Mssoudy increased the lead 12 minutes later to send the fans cheering all the way.
But after recess the Atlas Lionesses were on the receiving end as Nigeria attacked in numbers to score through Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a late winner by Joe Echegini.
Eleven minutes later Okoronkwo turned provider and give Ijamilusi chance to equalize. As the match was headed towards the end, Echegini found the winning goal after 88 minutes.
“This is a very sweet win and I thank the players for the hard work against a tough opponent,” said Nigeria’s coach Justin Madugu.
Nigeria have now won a record 10 WAFCON titles in the 13 editions.
