The technical bench of South Africa’s national football team has today named it’s squad ahead of the COSAFA Cup 2022.
Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele named his 23-man squad today ahead of the tournament slated for July 5-17th in Durban, South Africa.
Senegal will play in the tournament as guests, while 14 members of the COSAFA Zone minus Zimbabwe who are serving a FIFA suspension will tussle it out.
“This was not an easy process to go through given the fact that everybody in the team showed the hunger and desire to be in the final squad,” says Mkhalele.
The coach said facing Mozambique in the quarter final will not be an easy task. “The first game against Mozambique is going to be crucial because this is a side we beat in last year’s edition en route to the final,” added the coach.
Zimbabwe have won the COSAFA Cup title a record six times, while Zambia and the Bafana Bafana have won it five times each, Angola three times and Namibia once.
Durban will host the competition for the second time after hosting the first time in 2019. Zambia beat Botswana in the final during the 2019 COSAFA Cup.
