ABIJAN, Jan 28 – A late header by Mohamed Bayo was enough to send Guinea to the quarter final of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Ivory Coast.
The determined Guinea team that had never made it to the quarter final stage edged a hard fighting 10-man Equatorial Guinea team 1-0 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday.
Equatorial Guinea’s veteran skipper Emilio López Nsue had earlier missed a penalty in the early half, but Guinea kept focused and pushed forward looking for the goals that would send them to the next round.
Federico Bicco Akieme Nchama had been sent off for Equatorial Guinea after a bad challenge before his team earned a penalty that Nsue missed.
It was all celebrations after Mohamed Bayo nodded in a 90th minute goal that gave Guinea the lead. The match ended shortly as the Guinea players and fans celebrated.
Guinea now join Angola and Nigeria in the quarter final stage. On Saturday Angola sunk Namibia 3-0, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria stopped Cameroon 2-0.
Later tonight Egypt will face DR Congo in another knock out tie at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pédro.
