Egypt win African Men’s Handball Championship to qualify for Olympics

CAIRO, Jan. 28 – Egypt are the winners of the 26th African Men’s Handball Championship that concluded in Cairo on Saturday.

The hosts defeated Algeria 29-21 win over Algeria in the final here on Saturday. The win also gives Egypt chance to play in the Paris Olympics 2024.

To reach the final Egypt defeated 1o-time winners Tunisia, while Algeria saw off Cape Verde at the semi final stage.

It is the third consecutive African title and the ninth in total for the Egyptian handball men’s team since the biennial championship debuted in 1974.

Egypt reached the final after defeating 10-time title holders Tunisia, while Algeria made it by beating Cape Verde. But the Cape Verde team picked a consolation beating Tunisia in the third place play-off.

Later the Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi congratulated the Egyptian team for winning the title. “I would like to praise the heroic performance of all the team members. Egypt’s handball team has become a model of success, staying at the top of the game,” said the President in a statement.

The competition that started on January 17th, 2024 attracted 16 teams. The top five team at the competition ; Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde and Guinea also qualified for the 2025 World Men’s Handball Championship that will be held in Croatia, Denmark and Norway.
