Tunisian Ons Jabear storms Wimbledon women’s singles final

Ons Jabeur has reached the final of the women’s singles at the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament 2022.

The Tunisian stopped Tatjana Maria 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the first semi final match played on Thursday.

“I am happy to reach the final and hope that my performance inspires many Tunisian back home,” said Jabear after the semi final match.

She became the first Arab woman to reach the final at a Grand Slam tournament. She beat Marie Bouzkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the quarterfinal stage and will now wait to face the winner between Elena Rybakina and Simona Halep.

The 27-year old Jabeur who is now ranked No. 2 has been setting record after record for Arab players in recent years. She became the first Arab woman to reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament in 2020 at the Australian Open. In 2021, she was the first Arab player to break into the top 10 of the men’s or women’s rankings, then became the first Arab to win a WTA title.
