The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) has announced that they will enter athletes from 11 disciplines in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
The international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth is scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from July 28th to August 8th, 2022.
Donald Rukare, the UOC President says they are confident that Team Uganda to Birmingham will win several medals.
He made it clear that several athletes are busy preparing locally while others are keeping in shape by taking part in International events around the world. “We shall have close to 100 athletes travel to England for the Games where we expect to have a better performance than we did in 2018 in Gold Coast,” added Rukare.
Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, Uganda’s star athlete who is the reigning Olympic champion in the 5000 metres and silver medalist for the 10,000 metres will lead Team Uganda in their hunt for medals.
“We already have over 20 athletes who have qualified for the Games and we are optimistic the team will win several medals in Birmingham,” says Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF).
Uganda will also field athletes in Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Swimming, Squash and Table Tennis. The national teams of Rugby and Netball also qualified for the Games.
Team Uganda won six medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia.
