Swiss lawyer Gianni Infantino will be re-elected as President of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on March 16th, 2023.
Infantino won a five-candidate race in 2016 to replace Sepp Blatter, and was re-elected unopposed in 2019.
According to a communication from FIFA issued on November 17th, 2022 Infantino is the only candidate who has showed that he will stand.
“Following the call for election issued by the FIFA Council on 30 March 2022, FIFA’s member associations have proposed, in due time and form, the following candidate for the presidential election due to take place at the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, on 16 March 2023,” said the communication which added that it’s only the incumbent Infantino who has sent in his documentation to contest.
He’s now set to stay in the job beyond the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
According to the Electoral calendar issued on 30th, March, 2022, the deadline for submission of the candidatures for the office of FIFA presidency by FIFA Member Associations was within a four months period prior to the 75rd FIFA Congress.
The Electoral calendar also stipulates that one month prior to the 73rd FIFA Congress would be the deadline for notifying the FIFA Member Associations of the names of the proposed and admitted candidates.
