Hosts Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia are the teams that have made winning starts in the on-going TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022.
In the opening Group A match played on Saturday Captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s free-kick just before the half-hour was enough for Morocco to earn a 1-0 win against Burkina Faso in a match played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.
Senegal made sure they went top of Group A with a 2-0 victory against Uganda Crested Cranes on Sunday. Diakite Ndeye converted a penalty after 39 minutes, while Nguuenar Ndiaye made it 2-0 after 50 minutes for Senegal.
Later Zambia who are playing without their inspirational skipper Barbara Banda because of medical reasons held Cameroon to a goaless draw in a Group B match played at the Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca.
But the second Group B match saw Tunisia humble a 10-man Togo team side 4-1.
The Ladies Sparrwohawks tried to fight back, but failed to match the Tunisian team. Mariem Houij netted first for the Eagles of Carthages, Sabrine Ellouzi bagged a brace, and another an own goal by Togo’s goalkeeper Ame Amouklou. Togo netted a penalty through Odette Gnintegma.
Action continues today with 9-time African champions Nigeria facing South Africa, while Burundi take on Botswana in Group C matches in Rabat.
