KIGALI, June 14. – The newly refurbished Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda has been approved to host International matches.
Rwanda Football body (FERWAFA) has confirmed that FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have approved the Stadium to host international football matches and competitions.
“Following the review of the report by CAF, please note that the stadium is approved for use in all competitions upcoming CAF/FIFA competitions since it meets all the set minimum CAF stadium requirements to host such matches,” a statement issued by CAF dated June 13th, 2024 reads in part.
Under Turkish company SUMMA and Real Contractors, the renovation of the stadium started in August 2022. Among some of the things, the seating capacity of the Stadium was increased from 25,000 to 45,000.
The Stadium was refurbished after the Rwanda President Paul Kagame, an ardent Football fan gave the go ahead to turn it into a world class facility.
Before the official opening of the Stadium slated for July 4th, 2024, fans will be given chance to come and have a feel of the refurbished Stadium when Rwanda Premier League champions APR FC face arch-rivals Rayon Sport FC in a special match.
The Amahoro Stadium will also host the Veterans Club World Championship slated for September 1-10. APR FC and Police FC that will represent Rwanda in the 2024/2025 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies Confederation Cup respectively are expected to use the Amahoro Stadium as home ground for the International engagements starting in August.
