CAIRO, Feb 9. – It was a case of revenge when Uganda Gazelles defeated hosts 74-63 in the final of the Women’s AfroBasket Zone Five qualifiers that climaxed in Cairo on Saturday night.
China based Jane Asinde showed her prowess to lead from the front as captain sinking in 19 points to ensure Uganda emerged champions in the final played at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall.
Enroute to the final Uganda Gazelles had defeated South Sudan, Kenya and Burundi, and only lost to Egypt. The final therefore provided a ground for revenge as coach Nicholas Natuhereza got of the blocks quicker and kept the momentum till the end.
Besides Asinde, Uganda’s other players who scored double figures included Paige Robinson 16 points and Jamila Nansikombi with 15 points. Egypt’s Raneem Elgedawy and Farida Abdelnabi collected 19 and 11 points respectively.
The win sees Uganda qualify to play in the Women’s AfroBasket finals to take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast later this year.
“I can’t explain the joy of being the captain and leading this team into victory. I am overwhelmed and grateful for the work we have to put in. I am grateful that we lost in the group phase match as we were able to correct our mistakes and come back ready to win it all,” said Uganda Asinde who was also voted Most Valuable Player of the Championship.
Natuhereza, Uganda’s coach said he was very happy with the way his team played and emerged victorious. “I am happy for my team and proud of all the players for the work they have put in to win this Final game that has been a problem through these years,” he added.
