KAMPALA, Uganda – India’s Sugi Sai Bala Singha Gopinath Singh is the winner of the U-19 men’s singles in the 2025 Uganda Junior International Badminton Championship.
The second seeded Singh defeated another player from India Angad Muchhal 21-5, 21-17 in the final played on Wednesday at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
To reach the final Singh had defeated Azerbaijan’s Uli Huseynov, while Muchhal saw off Amer Muhammed from Saudi Arabia.
In the women’s singles United Arab Emirates’ player Sakshi Kurbkhelgi defeated Hajar Nuriyeva (Azerbaijan) 21-17, 21-10
The pair of Sachin Jhajharia and Angad Muchhal from India emerged winners in the Men’s singles after stopping Gokul Kaviarasu and Surendar 21-16, 21-15.
In the women’s doubles final Tiya Bhurtun and Layna Luxmi Chiniah (Mauritius) upset the top seeds from Azerbaijan Leyla Jamalzade and Hajar Nuriyeva 21-17, 12-21, 21-19.
The Saudi Arabian pair of Amer Mohammed and Nabiha Shariff defeated Niranjaan G N Nandakumar and Daksha Vinoth Bindu (India) 21-17, 11-21, 21-17.
Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Director of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) said that the three day tournament has been successful and gave the local players a good platform to showcase their talent.
“This event was very competitive and players also got world ranking points for the juniors,” added Mugabi.
The 2025 Uganda Junior International Badminton Championship meant for U-19 players attracted players from Uganda, Mauritius, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, India, Switzerland and Egypt among others.
